The Federal Council's new proposal to create an electronic proof of identity (e-ID) has cleared a second parliamentary hurdle. Following its approval by the National Council's preliminary consultation committee in November, it has now been accepted by the National Council.
The Council passed the resolution on Thursday without opposition. The parliamentary group spokespersons consistently spoke of a good bill. The Confederation had drawn the right conclusions from the defeat in 2021, when the people clearly rejected the first e-ID proposal.
At the time, the Federal Council wanted private individuals to hand over the e-ID. However, due to security concerns - as surveys after the referendum showed - the people rejected the proposal. Now the federal government is to be responsible for issuing the e-ID and providing the infrastructure required for its operation.
The e-ID should be available from 2026 and lay the foundation for Switzerland's digital transformation, according to the Federal Council. Following its approval, the National Council began detailed deliberations on the bill.
