The Federal Council draws a positive interim conclusion on the job registration requirement for professions with high unemployment, which has been in force for almost six years. However, it wants to further improve the situation for women and older employees in particular.

These are the findings of the overall review on the promotion of domestic labor potential by the federal government, cantons and social partners, which the Federal Council adopted on Friday. The report provides an initial assessment of the so-called priority for Swiss nationals. With this, Parliament implemented the mass immigration initiative of the SVP, which was approved by the people and cantons in mid-2018.

One of the measures taken in this context is the job registration requirement for professions with high unemployment. In May 2019, the Federal Council also adopted a package of measures aimed at ensuring the competitiveness of the domestic workforce and strengthening social security for older unemployed people.

Administration is at work

According to the Federal Council, the results of the report show that the labor market indicators have developed positively in recent years. The existing measures have made an important contribution to promoting and utilizing the potential of the domestic workforce.

However, the state government wants to further promote this potential. There is a need for action in terms of labor market participation for two target groups in particular: on the one hand women, for example women returning to work or women who have joined their families, and on the other hand older employees, especially the long-term unemployed with specific needs.

The Federal Council issued various mandates based on the report. For example, the Federal Department of Economic Affairs is to set specific priorities to improve the exploitation of the potential of women and older workers in the areas of the labor market and education. In addition, the Federal Council instructed the Department of Justice to provide greater support to well-qualified persons in family reunification for the recognition of professional qualifications and for professional integration.
