The 38th edition of the Freiburg International Film Festival opened on Friday. Until March 24, 100 films will be shown at the festival. One thematic focus is hip-hop culture, according to the organizers.
The president of the Festival International de Films de Fribourg (Fiff), Mathieu Fleury, said that the festival was once again "fulfilling its mission of highlighting the universal in the immense diversity of human creativity".
The new co-heads of the Film Section of the Federal Office of Culture, Nadine Adler and Laurent Steiert, were also present. In her speech, Adler emphasized the importance of film festivals. No streaming platform can offer the social experience and the feeling of togetherness, she said. According to the press release, Steiert called for the continued defense of the independence of Swiss and European filmmaking
The opening film was "Dilli Dark" by Dibakar Das Roy. The film is a satire about racism against a Nigerian exile in New Delhi.
Hip-hop and North Macedonian films
This year's Genre Cinema section is dedicated to hip-hop culture. The festival will be showing thematically appropriate films, including classics such as "La Haine" by Mathieu Kassovitz. The occasion is the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.
In the New Territory section, the Fiff presents the world's first overview of North Macedonian films. Ten feature films, two documentaries and seven short films focus on a country that has suffered under occupation and war.
Of the 100 films in the program, five are world premieres, a further five are international and European premieres and forty are Swiss premieres. The 38th Fiff runs from March 15 to 24.
