Five to six houses went up in flames in a major fire in the village center of Elgg ZH on Saturday night. The extinguishing work took over twelve hours. Several dozen people had to be evacuated. No one was injured. The property damage was enormous.
The emergency call was received by the fire department at 00:20. According to the Zurich cantonal police, a house in the center of the village was already fully engulfed in flames when the emergency services arrived, after which the fire spread to several neighboring buildings.
The residents of the buildings affected by the fire and the surrounding properties also had to be evacuated due to the heavy smoke. Residents were asked to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Over twelve hours of extinguishing
The actual extinguishing operation was only completed on Saturday afternoon, as the Zurich cantonal police reported at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. Only a few firefighters were still on site to keep watch and clear up the fire.
A "few dozen" residents were able to return to their homes. The municipality has organized emergency accommodation for those whose properties were severely affected by the fire.
In addition to the five to six houses that burned down, other buildings were damaged by the heat or the extinguishing water. As the severely affected houses could not yet be entered, the cause of the fire remains unclear. This should not be possible until the beginning of the week, said Frei.
