The green mayor of Bern, Alec von Graffenried, will face competition from the red-green camp in the November elections. On Monday evening, Bern's SP decided to put forward its own candidate.

The decision was clear with 98 votes in favor, 7 against and one abstention, as the two co-presidents of the party announced to the media. The debate and resolution were not public. With their vote, the members followed a proposal by the party leadership.

Marieke Kruit, who has been a member of the city government since 2021, is standing for election. She will be officially nominated in May.

Following the SP's decision, other candidates are likely to enter the race, particularly from the center-right camp with the GLP, Center, EVP, FDP and SVP.

The SP believes that Kruit's candidacy will strengthen the joint red-green-center alliance. The electorate should "have a choice". Von Graffenried prevailed against an SP candidate in a competitive election in 2016 and is now seeking his third term in office.
