More sweets were exported from Switzerland last year. Exports of Swiss "sugar confectionery" increased significantly in 2023. In contrast, "long-life baked goods" recorded a decline.
Exports of local "sweets" rose by over 10 percent to 35,275 tons last year, as the industry association Biscosuisse announced on Tuesday. The USA, the most important export market, was the main contributor to this growth. In contrast, domestic sales fell slightly by 3.8 percent to 5,240 tons.
Meanwhile, sales of sugar confectionery also rose due to price increases both in Switzerland and abroad. Export sales climbed by almost 16 percent to 329 million Swiss francs and a slight increase of 3.6 percent to 77 million Swiss francs was also recorded in Switzerland.
Fewer biscuits sold
Last year was slightly worse for manufacturers of long-life baked goods. The total sales volume fell by 4.4% to 42,756 tons in 2023. Thanks to price increases, industry turnover remained stable at 508 million, with domestic sales accounting for the lion's share at 427 million.
Of the long-life bakery products, biscuits accounted for just under half of total production, according to the press release. This is followed by the categories "bread-like baked goods and cereal bars" with around 30 percent and "aperitif and savory cookies" and "fresh baked goods" with a good 11 percent each.
As an industry association, Biscosuisse unites the industrial Swiss manufacturers of sugar confectionery, long-life baked goods and other food products.
