At least five people were killed in a coach accident on the A9 highway near Leipzig in Germany on Wednesday. This was announced by the police on request. There were also numerous injuries. The long-distance coach was on its way from Berlin to Zurich in the morning.

The coach had crashed between the Wiedemar junction and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz junction. The vehicle had left the road for an unknown reason and crashed onto its side.

Several rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances are in operation. The highway is closed in both directions. Drivers have been asked to keep a rescue lane clear. The Schkeuditzer Kreuz junction is located at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The A9 is an important north-south highway connecting Berlin and Munich.

Meanwhile, the hospitals in the area were preparing for a large-scale operation. The emergency room had been alerted and operating theaters and diagnostic rooms were being prepared and kept available, said a spokesperson for the Deaconess Hospital in Leipzig on request. In addition, the control center has been informed of the capacities available for the admission of patients.

Following the devastating bus accident with at least five fatalities on the A9 near Leipzig, the provider Flixbus was deeply saddened. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this accident and their families," said a spokesperson for the company on Wednesday in response to an inquiry.
