The Zurich District Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 11 years' imprisonment for attempted murder. The Brazilian had almost killed a prostitute in Zurich in 2018.
The course of the crime, the choking twice until unconsciousness, has been established for the court, as the judge said on Wednesday. Every child knows what can happen, he noted. He had at least accepted the woman's death. Because he had acted out of greed, only attempted murder came into question.
The court also handed down a 10-year expulsion order. The accused is to pay the victim 30,000 francs in compensation. This is proportionately high, said the judge. The verdict is not yet final.
The 24-year-old had admitted to choking the woman twice to the point of unconsciousness. He had booked her through an escort service the day after his girlfriend had broken up with him.
The aim of the attack was to steal from the woman. To do this, he wanted to render her unconscious, as he said in court. The judge found it "strange" that the 24-year-old had decided to rob the woman instead of demanding sex.
The accused had at least confessed quickly, said the judge in his reasons for the verdict. The court also believed that he regretted the crime.
