The western military alliance NATO is to open a liaison office in Geneva this year. The city is home to the UN and many international organizations. Both the Federal Council and the North Atlantic Alliance have already given their approval.
This is according to a Swiss army document published by the weekly newspaper "WoZ" on Wednesday evening. It is a memo from the army's general staff dated December 22 last year.
The memo states: "The office is to be located on the premises of the GCSP/Maison de la Paix. The Federal Council approved the opening of a NATO liaison office at the request of the FDFA on 22. 11. 2023. On 14 December 2023, NATO formally informed Switzerland that the allies had given their final approval for the opening of the office."
The timetable has not yet been worked out in detail. However, it can be assumed that the liaison office to International Geneva could be opened in 2024.
The liaison office will therefore not deal with relations with Switzerland, but will work with the UN and international organizations, as NATO already does at the UN headquarters in New York or in Vienna - there with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Consistent sources have told the Keystone-SDA news agency in recent months that discussions about the liaison office in Geneva have been ongoing for several years. However, one NATO member state is said to have delayed the establishment for financial reasons. According to the same sources, only one Nato liaison officer will be based in Geneva.
