Sheep breeders from St-Barthélémy near Echallens VD dumped the carcasses of twelve sheep outside the headquarters of the Vaud cantonal government in Lausanne around midday on Saturday. The sheep had been torn the night before, one of them told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The ten breeders criticized the devastating damage caused by wolves in the Gros-de-Vaud region. Ten days ago, seventeen sheep were killed in the village of Poliez-Pittet. Last night there were 13 kills in the region, and two on Wednesday night.
According to their own statement, the breeders wanted to increase the pressure on the state councillor responsible, Vassilis Venizelos, with their action. On a banner, they called on the Green politician to resign, as reported by a Keystone-SDA photographer.
The police were expecting the protesters and initially cordoned off the Place du Château when they arrived. After a brief negotiation, they allowed the breeders to deposit the remains of the animals on tarpaulins at the foot of the stairs to the Château St-Maire.
