Alevtina Ioffe will succeed Nicholas Carter, the current chief conductor of the Bühnen Bern opera house. Ioffe will take up her post in summer 2025, as Bühnen Bern announced on Thursday. The Russian will be the opera's first female chief conductor.

Alevtina Ioffe has lived in Berlin since 2022 and has conducted at the Komische Oper Berlin and the Staatstheater Stuttgart, among others. The conductor has also conducted European and US orchestras.

Ioffe has also been seen and heard in Switzerland: She was responsible for the musical direction of the Zurich Opera House's production of "On the Move" last year. The Russian will now be moving the center of her life to Bern and becoming the opera's first female chief conductor, as Bühnen Bern told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

Ioffe studied choral conducting, classical singing and piano in Moscow. In Russia, she conducted the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, for example, before working abroad in 2018. "We are proud and grateful that we have been able to engage an internationally acclaimed artist in Alevtina Ioffe," said Artistic Director Florian Scholz in the press release. Ioffe's contract is valid for four years. In summer 2025, Co-Opera Director and Chief Conductor of the Opera Nicholas Carter will leave the house after four years.

Scholz's contract has been extended until summer 2029, as have those of Theater Director Roger Vontobel, Opera Director Rainer Karlitschek and Dance Director Isabelle Bischof. According to a statement from Bühnen Bern, Florian Scholz will also remain concert director of the Bern Symphony Orchestra.
