Switzerland is the guest of honor at the Marché du film, which takes place as part of the Cannes Film Festival (14.05.-22.05.). This film market is a platform for the international film industry.

After India and Spain, Switzerland is the third country to be granted the platform of a guest appearance by the film market in Cannes. According to Swiss Films, the promotion agency for Swiss film, around 300 people from all areas of Swiss film will be attending. Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and Carine Bachmann, Director of the Federal Office of Culture, will also be in attendance. The Marché de film takes place as part of the Cannes Film Festival, this year from May 15 to 18.

In terms of content, the focus is generally on innovations in the film industry and this year also on Switzerland as a country for co-productions. In the past, Switzerland has already co-produced films that have shone far beyond the country's borders, such as the animated film "Ma vie de courgette" (2016). Valais filmmaker Claude Barras was awarded a César and nominated for an Oscar for this film. Or "Heidi" (2015) with Bruno Ganz, which was sold in over 50 countries.

The Marché du film is taking place for the 77th time this year and, with over 14,000 participants, is regarded as the largest international gathering of filmmakers. The market is a platform where distributors and sales companies buy new films. Producers meet there to look for financing for their projects. The Marché du film is also a place where people think about the future of the film industry and where innovations are presented.

Against this backdrop, a so-called "Swiss Hub" is planned. Swiss start-ups will present their innovations for the audiovisual sector there. And Swiss filmmakers are to take part in programs and panels.

Examples of Swiss companies in Cannes include Largo.ai from Lausanne with an AI platform and Zurich-based Copresence, which specializes in avatars. Switzerland will also be represented in Cannes by representatives, producers and projects from the XR scene (augmented reality).

Switzerland's guest appearance at the Marché du film is organized by Swiss Films in collaboration with the Federal Office of Culture and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation SRG SSR.
