Switzerland emitted 41.6 million tons of CO2 equivalents in 2022. This is 3.5 million tons less than in 2021. Greenhouse gas emissions fell in the building sector in particular because less heating was needed due to the warm winter.

Overall, Swiss CO2 emissions were 24 percent lower than in 1990, according to the Federal Office for the Environment's (FOEN) annual greenhouse gas inventory. The inventory will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in April.

Greenhouse gas emissions from buildings fell by 44 percent compared to 1990. Emissions from industry also fell, namely by 27 percent compared to 1990. The transport sector was 8 percent below the 1990 level. CO2 emissions in agriculture fell slightly.
