Switzerland’s electricity consumption decreased in 2023

Electricity consumption in Switzerland has fallen: In 2023, 1.7 percent less electricity was consumed in this country than in the previous year. According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, electricity production also increased by 13.5% and reached a new record level.
In 2023, 72.1 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity were produced in Switzerland, as announced by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) on Thursday. This was a new record figure. In 2022, electricity production was still at 63.5 billion kWh. After deducting the consumption of storage pumps, net generation in 2023 amounted to 66.7 billion kWh.
According to the press release, national electricity consumption amounted to 60.3 billion kWh last year. After deducting distribution and transmission losses, electricity consumption amounted to 56.1 billion kWh - 1.7 percent or around one billion kWh less than in the previous year. According to the SFOE, this is roughly equivalent to the annual consumption of 200,000 households.
