For the third time in a row, the Visions du Réel film festival's top award has gone to a Swiss film. On Friday evening in Nyon VD, Nicole Vögele was awarded the Grand Prix 2024 in the festival's international feature film competition.

The Swiss-German filmmaker and journalist Vögele received the award for her film "The Landscape and the Fury", as the organizers announced on Friday evening. The documentary is dedicated to the Bosnian-Croatian border region, where migrant families, mines and locals meet. The film deals with questions about home and violence, but also coincidence.

This is the third year in a row that a Swiss film has won the Grand Prix of Visions du Réel: in 2022, Lausanne's Tizian Büchi won the main prize with "L'Îlot", and in 2023, Canadian-Swiss director Peter Mettler won with "While the Green Grass Grows".

The special prize in the international competition went to Congolese filmmaker Nelson Makengo for his film "Rising up at Night". The documentary is a portrait of the inhabitants of Kinshasa, who only have limited access to electricity and experience many dark nights.

Palestinian film honored

In the "Burning Lights" competition, which is dedicated to new film forms, "A Fidai Film" by Palestinian director Kamal Aljafari was honored. The Special Jury Prize in this section went to "Riders" by Argentinian director Martín Rejtman.

The film "Brunaupark" by Swiss-German filmmakers Felix Hergert and Dominik Zietlow won an award in the national competition. The documentary tells the story of a Zurich neighborhood in which a block of houses is threatened with disappearance. Filmmaker Francesca Scalisi took home the section's special prize for the Italian-Swiss film "Valentina e i Muostri".

For the first time, the Audience Award was presented together with the other awards. "No Other Land" impressed the festival visitors. The film by a Palestinian-Israeli collective has already won an award at the Berlinale and sheds light on the situation in the West Bank.

The 55th edition of Visions du Réel continues until Sunday.
