In a combative May Day speech on Wednesday in Biel/Bienne, Pierre-Yves Maillard, member of the SP Council of States (VD), denounced "the completely false inflation figures" that are published in Switzerland. Health insurance premiums are excluded from the calculation.

Maillard, who is also President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), compared health insurance premiums to "a tax". They are "the only tax that has no upper limit and is never voted on", Maillard continued. And if it is not a tax, "why are health insurance premiums not included in the official inflation figures?" asked the SGB President.

Due to this "omission", the actual inflation is vastly underestimated. Maillard is campaigning for the SP's premium initiative, which will be put to the Swiss electorate on June 9.

The SGB will also fight against the reform of the second pillar, which it believes will increase wage costs by two billion francs per year and at the same time reduce pensions in the mandatory part by 13 percent, Maillard continued. The SGB will also fight against the liberalization of the healthcare system and for public services in the electricity and transport sectors.

Maillard criticized "statistical distortions" and biased studies and said that the figures pointing to an increase in part-time work obscured the reality. The actual volume of work in households is increasing, while wages are stagnating. In some areas and in view of declining purchasing power, "it's not that we no longer want it (the system), but that we can no longer do it," said Maillard.
