A father and his son were sentenced to seven and three and a half years in prison respectively by the Geneva Criminal Court on Thursday for serious human trafficking. The two men had brought people into Switzerland to beg.

The defendants, who belong to the Roma community from Bulgaria, had disregarded people's freedom by exploiting their vulnerability for "commercial" purposes, the court found. The exploited persons were stuck in Switzerland and had no possibility of returning to their country.

According to the court, the 52-year-old father brought family members to Geneva to beg, but also people who were not related to him. He collected all or part of the money begged by his "employees". He threatened and insulted his victims if the results did not meet his expectations.

The 34-year-old son had followed in his father's footsteps and displayed the same behavior as his father, the judges emphasized.
