A train operated by the Lötschberg Railway (BLS) derailed on the Simplon line on the Italian side on Sunday afternoon, but no one was injured or killed. The accident was caused by boulders on the tracks near Preglia outside Domodossola.
A BLS spokesperson confirmed to Keystone-SDA on Sunday evening reports from the Italian news agency Ansa that the accident occurred around 15 kilometers from the Swiss border. The derailed train was heading towards Brig in Valais, carrying around 150 passengers and staff, according to Ansa. A train traveling in the opposite direction towards Domodossola was stopped.
The railroad line was initially closed for an indefinite period. BLS used buses to maintain the connection.
The fire department carried out helicopter overflights to check the stability of the slope from which the rock had broken away.
