A 58-year-old Brazilian man has been standing before the Bernese High Court since Tuesday morning. In 2020, he was sentenced at first instance to more than 18 years' imprisonment for the murder of his ex-wife's new boyfriend.
At first instance, the defendant had argued that he had been provoked by his ex-wife's new boyfriend, which is why the fatal confrontation had occurred.
In the High Court, the sister described the victim as a hopeful, helpful man. He had always seen only the good in all people. She thought of her deceased brother every day, the sister emphasized.
The serious encounter took place in the convicted man's apartment in Bern-Bethlehem. The attacker is said to have stabbed the victim at least five times from behind. The accused then put a plastic bag over the victim's head and attached it to his neck with adhesive tape. He took the body to a forest near Meikirch, where he set it on fire.
