Around ten activists from the Renovate Switzerland climate movement briefly blocked the A2 highway southbound near Wassen UR on Thursday afternoon. They partially stuck themselves to the road and had to be removed by the police.
The blockade took place at the Dieden service station near Wassen, as the cantonal police of Uri reported to the Keystone SDA news agency. Renovate reported the action on the short message service X at around 12.00 noon. Two activists had stuck themselves.
According to the cantonal police, the evacuation took a short time. The emergency services also carried demonstrators away from the highway. The action made no difference to the existing traffic jam.
On X, Renovate called on the federal government to ban new fossil-fuel cars from 2025 and to invest in soft mobility and public transport. At the Gotthard, traffic jams endlessly several times a year and 96 percent of vehicles continue to run on fossil fuels. Politicians have opted for betrayal and abandonment in the climate emergency.
