According to a US authority, the Earth experienced its first "extreme" solar storm since 2003 on Saturday night, causing auroras in Switzerland, as reported by the federal weather service MeteoSwiss, among others.

The level five solar storm on the five-level scale was observed on Friday evening (local time), explained the Space Weather Prediction Center of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The solar storm is expected to last through the weekend.

Due to the strong geomagnetic storm, auroras were visible as far as the Swiss latitudes, as the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) announced on the online platform X on Friday evening. MeteoSwiss recorded the natural spectacle on a weather camera in Ravoire near Martigny VS. The Eschenberg Observatory in Winterthur also observed the natural spectacle, as reported by the observatory in the canton of Zurich.
