The Federal Council is against a tax on million-dollar inheritances to benefit the climate. On Wednesday, it set out its position on the Juso Future Initiative. In its eyes, the initiative is not the right way to achieve the climate targets.
The popular initiative "For a social climate policy - fairly financed through taxation (Initiative for a future)" calls for a 50% tax on estates and donations over CHF 50 million. The proceeds should be earmarked for combating the climate crisis and go to the federal government and cantons.
The Federal Council rejects the initiative. On the one hand, it points to what has already been done to combat global warming, including the Climate Protection Act adopted at the ballot box. The Federal Council is also concerned that the initiative wants to earmark the funds raised from inheritance tax.
The Federal Council does not want a counter-proposal to the initiative. The Federal Department of Finance has been instructed to prepare a dispatch to Parliament.
