Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's head of state and party leader Xi Jinping have ended their talks in China with a harmonious gesture. After a one-day program in Beijing, Putin and Xi first shook hands on Thursday evening and then hugged each other goodbye shortly afterwards, as can be seen on a video from state broadcaster CCTV. Xi waved to his guest as he drove off into the darkness in a limousine.
On Friday, Putin continued his two-day state visit to the northern Chinese city of Harbin. Among other things, the Kremlin leader wanted to visit a Russian-Chinese trade fair and a university there. Harbin has a Russian past that is still visible in the cityscape today, for example in the former Russian Orthodox Church. The industrial metropolis is located in China's northernmost province of Heilongjiang, which borders Russia, and is famous among the Chinese for its ice festival in winter.
At the talks in Beijing the previous day, Putin and Xi had agreed to continue their close cooperation. China and Russia, the warring party in Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine, also spoke out in favor of a solution through political agreement. Putin praised China's peace efforts. However, Beijing has not yet committed to the upcoming peace conference in Switzerland. A twelve-point plan proposed more than a year ago to resolve the conflict met with little international approval due to its vague proposals.
