More than half of young people are interested in an apprenticeship after the end of compulsory schooling in August 2024. This is followed by baccalaureate and technical secondary schools as well as intermediate solutions in the form of a gap year or bridging offer.

Almost two thirds of young men prefer an apprenticeship, according to figures published on Thursday by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Half of young women are interested in a baccalaureate or technical secondary school.

Over 60 percent of young people already have a signed apprenticeship contract. Two thirds of the almost 76,000 apprenticeships have been filled, the report continued. In addition to commercial apprenticeships, medical and social professions are popular among young women. For young men, it is apprenticeships in business and technical professions.

According to SERI, nine out of ten apprenticeships on offer lead to a Federal Certificate of Competence (FCC). One in ten leads to a Federal Vocational Certificate (FVC). Of the young people interested in a baccalaureate or technical secondary school, just under half have a guaranteed place.

The job barometer shows the current situation of young people between compulsory schooling and secondary level two. 7,700 young people aged between 14 and 17 were surveyed in writing from February to April. Around 5000 companies were also surveyed during the same period. The research institute gfs.bern conducted the study on behalf of SERI.
