The people of Glarus should also be able to travel from Glarus to Rapperswil SG and Zurich by train without changing trains in the future. This is what the federal councillors want.

After the Council of States, the National Council also adopted a motion on Tuesday entitled "No massive deterioration of public transport from and to the canton of Glarus". It comes from Glarus Councillor of States Mathias Zopfi (Greens) and will now be passed on to the Federal Council for implementation.

In his motion, Zopfi wrote that the current direct connections to Rapperswil and Zurich, which do not require a change of trains, would be removed according to the development program for the 2035 stage of the rail service. This would result in a significant deterioration in services. Commuters to and from the region would be affected, as would tourism.

The Federal Council informed Zopfi and the National Council that good transfer connections had been planned for the travel chains between Glarnerland and Zurich and Rapperswil in the 2035 service concept in Ziegelbrücke. In addition, the half-hourly S-Bahn service between Ziegelbrücke and Linthal had been decided.

However, the National Council followed its preliminary advisory committee, which had very clearly requested the motion be accepted. It wrote that, in its view, connections without changing trains in Ziegelbrücke were of great importance for both commuter traffic and tourism in the canton of Glarus.

Transport Minister Albert Rösti told the Council that the Federal Office of Transport's ongoing planning work for the 2035 service step showed that the direct connection to Zurich could be maintained. However, Rösti requested that the motion be rejected because the Federal Council could not yet provide a guarantee.
