Parliament finalizes first reform steps in juvenile criminal law

Parliament does not want to increase the maximum sentence for juvenile murderers for the time being. On Wednesday, the National Council followed the Council of States and thus amended the reform of the Juvenile Penal Code.
At the third attempt, the Grand Chamber decided not to insist on its position on the last open point of the bill. Originally, it wanted to increase the possible prison sentence for murderers aged 16 and over from four to six years. It has now decided against this by 104 votes to 81.
However, the Council of States did not want to clarify this issue in the current reform and referred to a broad analysis of the penalties in juvenile criminal law, which is to be presented by the Federal Council by the end of the year. Andrea Caroni (FDP/AR) said on behalf of the Council of States committee that this overall view was needed. The hearings on possible tougher sentences would begin immediately afterwards.
The bill is therefore ready for the final vote.
