The cantons of Zurich and Bern want to reform pre-trial detention: A pilot project is to show how so-called detention damage to detainees can be prevented.

The restrictive conditions in pre-trial detention were often harmful for those affected, representatives of the two cantons announced on Tuesday in the Meilen ZH training prison. Damage caused by imprisonment could make their reintegration more difficult.

According to a press release from Zurich's Director of Justice Jacqueline Fehr, the pilot project is intended to preserve the resources of the arrested person - such as their job, home or family structures.

The aim is to avoid detention losses and the associated costs, said Bernese Security Director Philippe Müller. "The pilot project must not have any influence on actual criminal prosecution."

Among other things, a "life area discussion" is being tested when entering prison and the "Prison Stress Management" program.
