In Geneva, the authorities are warning against swimming in the Rhone due to the high water level. To reduce the risk of flooding on the shores of Lake Geneva, the sluices at the Seujet dam have been fully opened.

These measures led to dangerous conditions with faster and unpredictable currents, the canton of Geneva and the police wrote in a press release on Thursday. The strong currents could surprise even experienced swimmers. They significantly increased the risk of drowning or suffering a serious accident.

The discharge of the Rhone amounted to 580 cubic meters per second at the Seujet dam on Thursday. By comparison, an annual average of around 270 cubic meters of water per second flows out of Lake Geneva.
