China calls for “positive energy” from major powers in Ukraine war

China's head of state and party leader Xi Jinping believes the international community has a duty to ensure the resumption of talks between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Chinese state media, he said in talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Beijing that a ceasefire in the conflict could only be achieved as quickly as possible if all major powers contributed positive rather than negative energy. The Hungarian arrived in China unexpectedly on Monday, marking the third stop on his "peace mission", as Orban himself described the trip on the online platform X.
Orban informed Xi about his recent visits to Russia and Ukraine, China's official news agency Xinhua reported. The Chinese head of state had appreciated Orban's efforts to promote a political settlement of the "Ukraine crisis". Xi reportedly said that China had campaigned for peace talks through its own channels and supported all efforts to reach a peaceful settlement to the crisis.
As Russia's most important ally, China is considered influential on the government in Moscow. However, Beijing's internationally neutral stance in the conflict strengthens the neighboring country's back. Beijing has already put forward its own proposals for a peace solution, some of which have been met with criticism. China canceled its participation in a Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland in mid-June. The main reason for the cancellation was thought to be that Russia was not present.
