With "Mary Poppins", the Lake Thun Festival is bringing a world-famous children's fairy tale to the Bernese Oberland. From July 10 to August 24, young and old will be performing on the Lake Thun stage in the form of an upside-down umbrella.
For the first time in the history of the Lake Thun Festival, children are playing major roles, according to a press release from the organizers. Four girls and four boys aged between 9 and 15 play the two main children's roles in pairs. They all come from the canton of Bern and surrounding regions.
With "Mary Poppins", the Thun musical makers tell the story of the London Banks family, whose children Jane and Michael dance around on their nanny's nose. Only the new nanny - Mary Poppins - manages to bring a new dynamic into the family with a little magic.
The German director Matthias Davids, artistic director of the musical division at the Landestheater Linz, is responsible for the new production of the musical, which is around 20 years old. With over 80 staged operas, musicals and plays under his belt, he brings a wealth of experience with him, the organizers added.
The Thunerseespiele celebrated its 20th anniversary last year with the production of "Dällebach Kari". The play dominated the German Theater Musical Prize 2023 in four categories, making it one of the big winners of the only award for German-language musicals.
