Following the Young SVP, the Taxpayers' Association in Zurich also launched a referendum against the ESC loan on Wednesday. A total of 2000 signatures are required.
The city parliament's decision, which is subject to a referendum, was published in the official gazette on Wednesday. The deadline is September 9. SRG's decision on the location should be made by then. A loan of CHF 20 million is at stake.
The Young SVP said on Tuesday that it was disconcerting that public funds were being used to support an event that was being misused to make political statements.
The right-wing conservative and evangelical-oriented EDU also demanded on Tuesday that all loans for the organization of the ESC be put to a popular vote. The party announced that it therefore intends to launch a referendum against the various ESC loans in the candidate cities.
Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern/Biel are in the running to host the event. The estimated costs of over 40 million francs would be largely financed by taxpayers' money, the party criticizes.
Referendum threats in Bern too
There are also threats of a referendum in Bern. A motion to voluntarily submit the city's contribution of seven million francs to the people failed in the city parliament. Exponents of the SVP and the Green-Alternative Party have now submitted the referendum form for preliminary examination.
At cantonal level in Berne, the SVP and EDU are threatening a referendum against the loan of almost 30 million presented by the cantonal government. The money is primarily intended to cover security costs.
