A follow-up conference to the Bürgenstock Summit is to take place this year. However, this second conference for peace in Ukraine will not be held in Switzerland, as President Viola Amherd said on Thursday.

Amherd met Swiss journalists for a media event on the fringes of the meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) at Blenheim Palace near the English city of Oxford. Security in Europe and Switzerland's efforts to bring peace to Ukraine were among the topics discussed at the EPC meeting.

Now other countries need to position themselves for the organization of another conference, said Amherd. Both sides, i.e. Ukraine and Russia, should take part in this conference. However, three smaller conferences are planned first, at which humanitarian issues as well as questions relating to nuclear safety and food security should be discussed.

Meeting with Orban

At the EPG meeting, Amherd also exchanged views with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The latter had traveled to Kiev, Moscow and Beijing at the beginning of the month and met with the heads of state of Ukraine, Russia and China. Orban told her that he was also interested in finding a solution, said Amherd.

Countries that have good relations with Russia should help to mediate, said the President of the Swiss Confederation. She also pointed out that Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis had recently met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. In order to facilitate a follow-up conference, talks would be held in various directions.
