UN human rights experts are calling for freedom for hundreds more political prisoners following the prisoner exchange between Russia and Western states. Between 700 and 1,372 people are still being held in Russia on false or politically motivated charges, according to a joint statement by the experts working for the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The experts welcomed the release of 16 people who had been imprisoned for their activities as journalists, artists, opposition members or activists, among other things. In return, ten people were handed over to Russia, including a convicted murderer and spies.

"The Russian government must release all other political prisoners immediately and unconditionally," demanded the UN human rights activists, who are monitoring the situation in Russia, the rights of human rights activists and the observance of freedom of assembly, among other things.
