Zurich GLP politician and co-president of Operation Libero, Sanija Ameti, has been heavily criticized and reported to the police after taking shots at a picture with a Christian motif. On Sunday evening, she deleted previously published photos and asked for an apology.

The Young SVP Switzerland filed a criminal complaint for violation of religious freedom and freedom of worship, as the party announced on Monday morning. Nicolas Rimoldi, founder of Mass-Voll, also announced a complaint. The cantonal parliament of Bern, the Grand Council, received a question from the SVP on the subject on Monday, as Ameti is a doctoral student at the University of Bern.

After Blick reported on the pictures Ameti published on Instagram on Sunday, it didn't take long for the 32-year-old politician to respond to the criticism. "I didn't think anything of it. I'm incredibly sorry," she wrote on X. She had deleted the pictures after becoming aware of the religious content.

Ameti had previously published pictures showing her with a sport pistol during shooting training, as well as a picture of Mary and Jesus shot through with numerous shots.

According to Ameti, the painting came from the catalog of an auction house. "Madonna with Child and Archangel Michael", as the painting is called, is by the Italian painter Tommaso del Mazzo, who lived in the 14th century. The painting is due to go under the hammer on September 20 for at least 150,000 francs.

Employer and party distance themselves

Even after the pictures were deleted, the criticism did not initially subside. Both her party, the GLP, and her employer, Farner Consulting, distanced themselves from the action. Ameti is a member of the Zurich city parliament and sits on the board of the GLP canton of Zurich.

Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the lawyer has been Co-President of Operation Libero for around three years. In this role in particular, she has already attracted attention on several occasions with provocations, such as when she said on a television discussion program in November 2022 that she could not "drink the two (then) SVP Federal Council candidates Albert Rösti and Hans-Ueli Vogt nicely from a political point of view".
