Gas suppliers in Switzerland must also build up reserves in the winter of 2025/26, now for the fourth time. The reserve must cover 15 percent of Switzerland's average annual consumption. This was decided by the Federal Council on Friday.

At its meeting on Friday, it extended the corresponding ordinance by one year, until the end of September 2026. The storage capacities for the winter after next will be sold from fall 2024.

In line with the EU regulation for member states without their own storage facilities, Switzerland stores 15 percent of its annual consumption in foreign storage facilities. Switzerland obtains all of its gas from abroad and there are no seasonal storage facilities on Swiss soil.

The supply situation for gas has eased compared to 2022, the Federal Council wrote. However, there are still risks in the coming years. The Federal Council has therefore dispensed with options for additional gas supplies for the winter of 2025/26, contrary to the recommendation of the gas industry.

However, the gas-consuming industry and trade associations were against the options due to the costs. According to the Federal Council, they consider the risk to be justifiable.
