President Viola Amherd and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis will represent Switzerland at the opening of the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. They will hold talks with several heads of state and government and ministers on the fringes.

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which runs from September 2024 to September 2025, will be opened as every year with a high-level week (September 22 to 25), the Federal Council announced on Friday. President Amherd will deliver Switzerland's official address on September 24 as part of the opening of the general debate.

Amherd will take part in other meetings, such as an event on the involvement of women in the peace process in Afghanistan. Among other things, Foreign Minister Cassis will meet with his counterparts from the current and newly elected members of the UN Security Council.

According to the communiqué, the General Assembly is the broadest dialog platform for the governments of the 193 UN member states.
