Parliament has approved the deployment of the army to assist with security at the World Economic Forum in Davos GR for the next three years. The Council of States, as the second chamber, approved the CHF 7.65 million commitment credit for this with only one vote against.
The Council thus followed its Security Policy Committee (SIK-S) on Wednesday, which had recommended the adoption of both federal resolutions without opposition. The National Council had already approved the bill last June. This means that the matter has been cleared through parliament.
"The WEF strengthens Switzerland as a conference venue and as the seat of international institutions," said SIK-S spokesperson Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (center/LU). In its explanatory statement, the SIK-S emphasized the importance of the World Economic Forum (WEF), including as a hub for Swiss diplomacy and for international exchange. In view of the economic benefits that Switzerland can derive from the event, the committee considered a financial contribution from the federal government to be appropriate.
On request, the Federal Council supports the canton of Graubünden in ensuring security at the WEF, which takes place every year in mid-January, by deploying a maximum of 5,000 members of the armed forces. Several hundred people protected under international law are present at the conference.
To finance the security measures at the WEF, the Federal Assembly approved a commitment credit of CHF 7.65 million to the Federal Council until 2027. The Confederation will therefore contribute CHF 2.55 million per year to the financing of the security measures. This corresponds to a share of 25 percent.
