On Wednesday, Eva Herzog (SP/BS), President of the Council of States, gave her colleagues from the lower chamber a tour of her home town of Basel. The excursion, entitled "All roads lead through Basel", was attended by 30 members of the Council of States and three members of the Federal Council.

With the motto "All roads lead through Basel", Herzog addressed the international freight transportation hub of Basel, which is the subject of several current political agenda items in the Swiss parliament, as she told the Keystone-SDA news agency. Specifically, she said she had lobbied for the trimodal terminal being built at the Rhine port and the revision of the Freight Transport Act - two key proposals for Basel-Stadt.

Accordingly, the excursion began at Basel's Rhine port. From there, they took the tug and push boat "Wild Maa" up the Rhine to the Tinguely Museum. The two councillors Franzisko Roth (SP/SO) and Andrea Caroni (FDP/AR) were persuaded by museum director Roland Wetzel to immortalize themselves with a work of art on Tinguely's drawing machine.

This was followed by a visit to the neighboring pharmaceutical multinational and museum founder Roche and an early dinner.

Three members of the national government were also in attendance: Karin Keller-Sutter (FDP) and Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (SP), while Basel Federal Councillor Beat Jans (SP) caused a bit of a stir among the numerous police and security staff present. He arrived a little late in a public pick-up bike and parked it dutifully at the parking area behind the museum, so that the security staff had to hurry after him.
