Following the "no" to the pension fund reform, Pierre-Yves Maillard, President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions, is calling for more solidarity in the financing of pensions. The result of the vote shows that the conservative parties have lost the trust of their base.

The "no" vote of almost 70 percent was "really unexpected", the Vaud Councillor of States told Swiss radio SRF on Sunday. The population does not want any further pension cuts. "This reality must finally reach parliament."

The base of the SVP and FDP is very clearly against the pension fund proposal, continued the President of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB). "But the leaders of these parties are not listening to their base."

Maillard emphasized that they were absolutely open to compromises. But there had to be improvements. It is very difficult to finance a good pension on a low salary. This problem could not be solved individually. "It needs a dose of solidarity." Maillard mentioned the possibility of credits for people who look after children.
