The railroad bridge between Sierre and Chippis is dismantled. The dismantling serves as a measure to prevent the Rhone from overflowing.
The dismantling of the bridge will begin at the beginning of October, the Valais State Council announced on Wednesday. The canton will bear the costs of the work and will also coordinate the relocation of the gas and water pipes that previously ran over the railroad bridge.
The dismantling is one of the measures to which the State Council referred on August 28, 2024 and which, in particular, make it possible to exempt works that are in the public interest from public requirements. This also includes the raising and renovation of the road bridge between Sierre and Chippis.
According to the canton, the two structures could cause the river to overflow and the industrial area to flood, as was the case during the storms at the end of June. Urgent measures to improve the safety of the plain on the right and left banks of the Rhone in Sierre and Chippis were ordered in accordance with the law on natural hazards and hydraulic engineering.
