Switzerland wants to strengthen democracies worldwide

Only 30 percent of the world's population live in a democracy. According to Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, Switzerland therefore wants to strengthen democracies worldwide based on its own positive experiences.
"Democracy brings considerable benefits for sustainable development and lasting peace," said Cassis on Wednesday at an event organized by the USA as part of the UN General Assembly.
The democratic institutions and processes in Switzerland bear witness to these positive consequences and have enabled the people to deal with linguistic, religious and cultural diversity and find unity.
Switzerland is currently working on developing "democracy guidelines", Cassis continued. These include, for example, the promotion of dialogue, the provision of knowledge and financial support, as well as respect for generally recognized fundamental rights for the dignity and freedom of people.
Sudan in worst humanitarian crisis
The Foreign Minister also took part in a meeting on the situation in Sudan. Switzerland is deeply concerned about the war in Sudan, particularly in view of the devastating impact on the Sudanese population.
A few years ago, Sudan was seen as a model for a political transition from military rule to a civilian government. But now the war has triggered the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
"Millions of people have had to flee, and even more are suffering from severe food insecurity. This misery is man-made and must come to an end," said Cassis.
Switzerland is committed to promoting peace in Sudan. "Despite our best efforts, direct talks between the parties have not yet been possible. However, we remain determined not to give up," said the Foreign Minister.
The United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Nations, the African Union and Switzerland have formed a group to promote peace in Sudan.
Mediator role in the Ukraine war?
By attending the opening of the 79th UN General Assembly, Mr. Cassis aimed to position Switzerland as a mediator not only in Sudan and the Middle East, but above all in the war in Ukraine.
The Foreign Minister said that his department was in constant contact with Moscow and was working steadily towards the next peace conference, at which Russia would also have to be present. Mr Cassis will return to Switzerland on Thursday night.
