Consumer sentiment in Switzerland changed little in September 2024 compared to the previous month. The monthly consumer sentiment index compiled by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) stood at -34 points after -35 points in August.
However, consumer sentiment is thus well above the level of a year ago, as Seco reported on Friday. In September 2023, the index was still at -51 points. It had reached its lowest point to date in October 2023, when it slipped to just under -53 points.
The sub-indices 'Expected economic development', 'Past financial situation', 'Expected financial situation' and 'Time for major purchases' were above the previous year's level last month.
Since the beginning of 2024, the consumer sentiment index has been based on monthly surveys conducted by Seco instead of the previous quarterly surveys. These are conducted continuously using online questionnaires, with 2557 people taking part last month in German, French or Italian.
