The canton of Graubünden has extended the option of e-voting in federal referendums to seven additional municipalities next year. So far, voters in six pilot municipalities have been able to vote electronically. Gradually, all interested municipalities will be able to take part in the trial.
The canton of Graubünden draws a positive interim conclusion after the first electronic ballots, it wrote in a press release on Wednesday. Security was guaranteed at all times.
At the last ballot on September 22, more than ten percent of voters in the pilot municipalities of Domat/Ems, Lumnezia, Pontresina, Poschiavo and Safiental registered for electronic voting.
From the federal referendum on 18 May 2025, voters in the seven municipalities of Arosa, Bonaduz, Davos, Domleschg, Malans, Maienfeld and Silvaplana will also have the opportunity to cast their vote by mouse click, according to the press release. Further municipalities should be added in the course of the coming year.
The Federal Council granted the canton of Graubünden permission for e-voting trials in November 2023. It will use the Swiss Post system, which is also used in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen and Thurgau.
