The United Nations has drawn attention to the increasingly desperate situation of people fleeing Lebanon because of the war.

Around 430,000 people left for Syria alone following the Israeli attacks, said a spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency UNHCR in Geneva. However, as the border crossings were also attacked, there were many dangers - both for the refugees and for the UN aid workers there. The Israeli military attacked a border crossing between Lebanon and Syria from the air just today.

"The suffering of those who cross the border does not end here," continued UNHCR spokesperson Rula Amin. On the contrary, a further humanitarian catastrophe is looming at the refugees' respective destinations. After 13 years of civil war, the infrastructure in Syria has been severely damaged.

"These people are arriving in regions, towns and villages that have suffered greatly over the last 13 years," said Amin. More than 90 percent of the Syrian population need humanitarian aid themselves. "There is simply nowhere left for people to flee to and feel safe."

In the fight against the Lebanese Hezbollah, Israel has greatly increased its attacks on targets in the neighboring country in recent weeks, and ground troops are also being deployed.
