The Swiss had a great appetite for ice cream this summer. Sales of ice cream products in this country increased by 2.2% in the third quarter, as reported by the industry association Glacesuisse on Thursday. Over the year as a whole, however, sales declined slightly (-1.9 percent).

Growth of 5.4% was achieved with ice cream street products (including at kiosks) in the quarter under review, the report continued. Home consumption increased by 2.1%, mainly thanks to growth in blocks and bidons of over one liter (+14%). Ice cream cakes were less in demand (-20%). Meanwhile, sales in the food service sector fell by 2.2% compared to the previous year.

According to Glacesuisse, the summer of ice cream was characterized by an interplay of extreme weather conditions. This is also reflected in the statistics on ice cream sales. Heatwaves and drought in July contrasted with cool and rainy phases in June and August. There were surprisingly warm days in September, which led to a positive end to the ice cream summer, the report continued.

Members of the association include Gasparini, the Migros subsidiary Delica and Emmi, as well as the Nestlé joint venture Froneri and the local subsidiary of the Unilever group (Lusso).
