The Council of States is in principle in favor of introducing a childcare allowance to help parents with daycare costs. On Wednesday, it accepted a corresponding proposal from its Education Committee.
The small chamber voted in favor by 27 votes to 15 with one abstention. The detailed discussion was still pending.
An SVP minority in the preliminary consultation committee did not want to accept the bill. Among other things, it disputed that the federal government had the necessary constitutional powers, but did not succeed.
The care allowance should amount to at least CHF 100 per month, according to the preliminary consultation committee. The allowance should increase by CHF 50 for each additional half day of care. According to the majority of the committee, the cantons should decide on the financing of the allowance.
