The consumer restraint in Germany will presumably also affect Austria and Switzerland this winter. Initial signs point to fewer guests in the new season.
According to economists and experts, one of the main causes is the uncertainty of German consumers, who currently prefer to put money aside rather than spend it. When tourists save money on vacations, it tends to be on short trips and second and third vacations. This also includes winter vacations in the Swiss Alps.
"The main vacation is only saved to a very limited extent in Germany," says Dennis Utzerath, tourism expert at the Boston Consulting Group. According to a travel analysis by the Forschungsgemeinschaft Urlaub und Reisen in Kiel, there has already been a trend in the past two years towards limiting travel to one main vacation trip per year.
