Cassis and Sefcovic Take Stock of Switzerland-EU Location

On Tuesday, Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis travelled to Brussels to meet with European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic to discuss the relationship between Switzerland and the EU. Upon arrival, neither politician commented on the meeting. During the meeting, the two were alone, but were accompanied by their respective delegations for a subsequent working dinner. So far, ten rounds of exploratory talks have taken place, and the Swiss Federal Council adopted guidelines for the negotiation mandate at the end of June. The last meeting between the Swiss Foreign Minister and the EU Commissioner took place in Bern in mid-March, during which Sefcovic also held talks with social partners and cantons. The meeting between Ignazio Cassis and Maros Sefcovic was an important step in the ongoing negotiations between Switzerland and the EU. The two discussed the next steps in the talks, and the working dinner allowed for further discussion between the two delegations. The exploratory talks that have taken place so far have been successful, and the Swiss Federal Council has adopted guidelines for the negotiation mandate. The last meeting between the Swiss Foreign Minister and the EU Commissioner in Bern was also productive, with Sefcovic holding talks with social partners and cantons. The meeting between Cassis and Sefcovic is a positive step towards furthering the relationship between Switzerland and the EU.
