The Swiss people’s Party (SVP) looks poised to take more power while the Greens are expected to lose more votes, according to a new survey looking at Federal Election trends in Switzerland.

If the National Council had been elected in mid-July, the SVP would have won while the Greens would have lost votes. This shows the latest election poll commissioned by “Tamedia” and “20 Minuten.” It largely confirms statements made in previous surveys.

According to the survey conducted by the Leewas Institute between July 10 and 11 and published on Wednesday, the SVP would increase by 2.3 percentage points to a share of the vote of 27.9% – compared to 2019. This would make it the election winner. The Greens, in turn, would lose 2.5 percentage points and would have a total of 10.7% of the vote.

According to the survey, the FDP would lose 0.8 percentage points and end up at 14.3%. The middle would gain 0.1 percentage points and would come to 13.9%. SP and GLP would also gain voting shares. The SP would remain the second strongest force in the National Council. According to the survey, it now has a 17.3 percent share of voters (+0.5 percentage points). The GLP would now come to 10.7 percent (+0.4 percentage points). This would put the Green Liberals exactly on a par with the Greens.

All shifts are within the statistical error range of +/- 1.1 percentage points.

Health care costs in Switzerland have been on the rise (Keystone SDA).
Healthcare costs remain the most pressing problem

According to the survey, healthcare costs are still the most pressing problem from the point of view of the Swiss electorate. About 70% of those surveyed saw it that way. This peak value increased by three percentage points compared to the survey wave of February 2023. The topic of old-age provision and pensions ranked second with a share of 53% of those surveyed. Migration and immigration came third with a share of 48%. This is followed by energy supply (43%) and climate change (42%).

Health care costs and old-age provision occupy the top positions because these issues are mentioned as urgent problems in all political camps, while this is not the case with migration and climate change, the study authors write. A more detailed analysis of party sympathies shows that health costs are the top issue for voters from the FDP, Mitte and SP. But the health issue also ranks in the top three for the GLP, the Greens and the SVP.

According to the authors of the study, the results of the survey are based on 25,688 responses from survey participants modeled according to demographic, geographical and political variables.
