Swiss pension funds have achieved positive returns in the second quarter of 2023. According to Swisscanto's Pensionskassen-Monitor, the average Swiss pension fund achieved a positive performance of 1.43% in the second quarter of 2023, thanks to dynamic developments in the financial markets. The largest contributions to the returns came from stocks, while the picture for bonds was mixed. The estimated coverage ratios have also improved compared to the previous quarter, with nearly 46% of private and 13.5% of public pension funds having a coverage of more than 115%. Only 1.3% of private and 8.1% of fully capitalised public pension funds are in under-coverage. However, 89% of partially capitalised public pension funds are still in under-coverage. The estimates are based on the data from 472 pension funds with a total of 738 billion Swiss francs.
